Developing My Art Style

Working and crazy hair.

Hello friends! Instead of a project today, I thought I'd share some of what has shaped my art style. They say the goal as an artist is to create work that people will recognize as your style, so I've been working on this and asking myself where I am in my art. There are a few things that have shaped my work over the years, both in photography and design.
  1. Practice - I think some of my best work has come from class projects. I know for most artists, they need their own time to work and I understand! I'm there with you. But I've also developed my style the most when I'm in constant practice. It gives me the chance to see how I can improve and change for the next time. This summer, I have been working in a sketchbook and learning calligraphy techniques to improve. Practice is your best friend in anything you do, especially in shaping your art style.
  2. Constant exposure - I try to travel often because it exposes me to a variety of different types of art. I've found that constant exposure to art brings constant inspiration to your work. Some artists even suggest copying other artists until you have developed your own art style. I try to pick and choose my favorite elements of art pieces and incorporate them into my work. Seeing the success of other artists also pushes me to succeed.
  3. Online - Oh my word, the internet is such a blessing. I've found classes, foreign art pieces, groups of like-minded people and a place for feedback all online. It's so vast and information-filled that you can find most of what you need on websites and forums. I love Tumblr's art section as it's home to such creative and interesting art pieces (as far as the sketchy stuff, I just skip it). There are whole sites devoted to your art form, so finding them can be your best resource for developing your art style.
  4. Quotes - For some reason, quotes have always spoken to me! Especially the advice from well-known artists. Reading a quote by one of the greats is like meeting them in the street and picking their brain for a minute. I also love Bible verses. God has enriched each word to the benefit of our souls. How amazing! I love putting up quotes in my room to inspire my work ahead. Sticky notes are the best, friends.
  5. Nature - A big inspiration for me is nature. I have always included flowers or leaves in my art, even from a young age. Nature is proof of creation, and I love how each part of it is so detailed and intricate. My art is very detail-rich, which I think has been influenced by nature.
  6. Experiences - When I was in high school, I drew a lot. It was a time when I couldn't understand everything and I wanted a way of digesting my experiences. I drew what was in my head and on my mind and it gave me a huge sense of relief. It helped me to understand my world, and I think I still draw for the same purpose.
  7. Capturing my world - I see photography and art as expressions of your world. Only you have lived what you have lived, if that makes sense. You are the storyteller of the world you see around you, and creating something with it is the best way to show it to others. I see so much joy and beauty in this world, and I try to capture it through whatever I'm doing.
There is much more inspiration out there, but these are my favorites! I hope you can see my work someday and know it's mine ;)
